Today’s board was a perfect example of why you should always look for words that seem out of place.
The Yellow group was a breeze. Even if you aren’t a mechanic, words like BATTERY, ENGINE, and RADIATOR naturally group together pretty fast.
The Green group was also fairly easy, though if you aren’t a big veggie eater, you might have tried to link SPACE, SHIFT, and WEDGE together as some sort of physical movement or separation category. Thankfully, CHOPPED and HOUSE usually point straight to a menu.
The Blue group tripped me up for a second. Even though I am literally typing on a keyboard right now, my brain didn’t immediately connect ESCAPE and CONTROL. If you struggle with these, a good strategy is to step back and think about where you see these words in your daily physical environment, not just their dictionary definitions.
But let’s talk about that Purple group. This was incredibly tricky! The NYT puzzle makers love doing “words inside of words.” If you see a bizarre word like TRITONE or AT LAST sitting on the board with no obvious matches, try breaking the word apart. Once you spot Hydra hiding inside HYDRANT, the whole Greek mythology theme clicks into place.
