Whoopi Goldberg and Keith David Headline Highly Anticipated Captain Zero Feature Film
The Captain Zero universe is officially expanding from its award-winning short-form roots to a full-length feature film. Titled Captain Zero: Into the Abyss, the upcoming 2D animated action-drama is set to bring the story of Xerxes Hughes, a Haitian-American teenager grappling with the dual pressures of secret heroism and personal mental health, to a wider audience.
A Star-Studded Production
The project has secured significant industry backing, led by EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg. Goldberg is serving as an executive producer through her company, One Ho Productions, alongside Tom Leonardis. Joining the creative team is Emmy Award-winning actor Keith David, who will reprise his role as the “Depression Demon,” the physical manifestation of the protagonist’s internal struggles. The voice cast also features notable talents including Angelica Ross and Larenz Tate. The film is being helmed by co-directors Z Cher-Aimé and Andre Carl Engco.
Commitment to Traditional Craft
Produced by the Black-owned studio Cutting Edge Animation, the film stands out for its commitment to traditional artistic techniques. In an era increasingly dominated by digital automation, the creators have explicitly confirmed that Captain Zero: Into the Abyss will utilize hand-drawn 2D animation, eschewing AI-generated imagery to maintain artistic integrity.
A Decade in the Making
The project represents the culmination of a ten-year development journey led by creator Z Cher-Aimé. The Captain Zero brand has already built a strong foundation of critical success, boasting multiple Telly Awards and a 2026 NAACP Image Award nomination. Following the success of Captain Zero: Into the Abyss Part II, which premiered at the 2025 Tribeca Festival and found a home on AMC+, fans have been eagerly awaiting a feature-length installment.
Themes and Representation
Captain Zero distinguishes itself by moving beyond standard superhero tropes to focus on themes of teen empowerment, self-worth, and mental health awareness. The production team, which prioritizes BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ representation, aims to use the narrative to champion underrepresented voices. According to co-director Z Cher-Aimé, the film’s core mission is to demonstrate that the unique traits that set individuals apart are, in fact, their greatest superpowers.
With production slated to begin in 2027, the team has launched a Kickstarter campaign to support the film’s completion and the development of a companion comic book series, inviting fans to participate in the next chapter of the Captain Zero saga.
