Lois Kinder, a 44-year-old mother from Cheshire, suffered total liver failure after taking ashwagandha gummies daily for one year. The incident required an emergency liver transplant and resulted in permanent brain injury, raising questions about the safety of popular herbal supplements.

Kinder, who was previously healthy, began experiencing jaundice and severe malaise in July 2026. Her condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to an emergency admission at Warrington Hospital. She was later transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for a transplant on July 22, 2026.

During surgery, Kinder suffered three cardiac arrests caused by a pulmonary blood clot. This deprived her brain of oxygen, leaving her with significant neurological challenges. Her husband, Ollie Kinder, has since spoken out about the lack of awareness regarding the potential risks of these supplements.

Ashwagandha, or Withania somnifera, is marketed on social media as a stress-relief aid. However, health experts warn that the natural label can be misleading. While many consumers view these products as harmless, the herb has potent pharmacological effects on the endocrine and hepatic systems.

The supplement industry operates with less regulatory oversight than the pharmaceutical sector. Unlike prescription medications, many herbal products do not undergo rigorous clinical trials for safety before reaching consumers. This gap allows for the sale of products that can cause severe physiological reactions.

Medical literature currently documents approximately 70 cases of liver injury linked to ashwagandha. Hepatotoxicity is a known risk, particularly for those who take high doses over extended periods. Because the liver is responsible for metabolizing these compounds, excessive intake can trigger an inflammatory response.

This case highlights the need to consult with medical professionals before starting any new supplement regimen. Consumers should view herbal extracts with the same caution as synthetic medications and remain skeptical of health trends promoted by social media influencers.
